St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr.
Denzil L. Douglas is reiterating that his governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour
Party will continue to provide opportunities for the young people of the
twin-island federation to excel.
“Our young people are bright and energetic. And this Government is determined
to provide the kinds of opportunities that will allow them to develop their
talents, pursue new and fascinating options, and, generally, hold their own in
an increasingly technological world,” said Prime Minister Douglas as he praised
the spirit and determination of over 80 young people who made maximum use of
the iCAN Mobile App Development Workshop that the Government arranged through
the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Information Technology at the St. Kitts
Marriott Resort last week.
“We in the Government want Kittitians and Nevisians to know how to design, how
to develop, how to promote applications for smart devices that run the Apple,
Android, and Blackberry platform. The way we see it is like this: If St. Kitts
and Nevis is going to need these applications, and if someone has to design and
develop these applications, why not our own people? This Government does not
believe that our people must be consumers at all times, and in all
circumstances. No! Kittitians and Nevisians can design. We can develop. And we
can promote what we design and develop, too!,” Prime Minister Douglas said
during his weekly live call in radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” which
is syndicated on several radio stations.
Dr. Douglas praised his Minister of Information Technology and Youth
Empowerment, Hon. Glen Phillip for “stepping forward to make certain that the
type of opportunity existed for our very talented young people to explore these
new areas, excel, and grow.”
He pointed out that Minister Phillip arranged for BrightPath out of Trinidad
& Tobago to visit to serve as facilitators.
“As a result our young people simply wowed BrightPath. In fact, the facilitator
reports that after conducting these sessions throughout the Caribbean, St.
Kitts and Nevis was the first time that participants were able to and come up
not with one, not with two, but with three applications at the end of the
workshop. All of the other islands, much larger, many more schools, many more
