This was before the disasters, this was before everyone jus started feeling sympathetic to the hardships that the people face and have faced. To address the post, not only have Haiti been unlucky, but realistically some of the disasters have been because of the poor infrastructure and abuse that the country have endured over the years.
This is in reference to the mud slides which occurred a few years ago and killed approx. 10,000 people. Deforestation, which is prevalent in Haiti as a result of the abuse of the land while not replenishing what is taken, is what was responsible for such a disaster. These rains were no more persistent or greater in volume than that which occurs in any other Caribbean country.
Now this doesn't diminish the fact that they have also suffered at the hand of natural disasters but I jus wanted to let us be aware that the disaster are not all natural but are as a result of man as well.

RE: POOR POOR HAITI

Well I think our people have gone through a lot, and look we still survive...Missy always says if our foreparents were able to survive for us to be alive today, then we can survive anything. I would say out of evil cometh good. It is sad many in Haiti have lost their lives but sometimes we have to give our lives for the next generation (reflect back to slavery days). So I am still hopeful that Haiti will be rebuilt better and stronger.....I mean their buildings and homes were poorly built....It was like the "foolish" man who built his house on the sand (not calling Haitians foolish). But now buildings will be built on rocks with steel to make them stronger. and more comfortable.....that is my point......It will also make us from other parts of the world wake up and be thankful for what we have. We tend to waste things, overeat when others have little or nothing.....Remember Sudan in 1984.....That was a painful sight as well.......On the other hand I think it is the signs of the times.....Yes I believe that......I also hope that the man on the hill in SVG keep his *** quiet right wey he day, cause I remember 1979 too.

Like sending a message in a bottle, I sent my message on canned goods....I put my tel # and said "if u receive call me.." It may be 10 yrs later but you will know.

RE: POOR POOR HAITI

Hey Missy - good post! Sometimes there are no clear cut answers as to why tragedy strikes a particular group or a nation. But what is apparent is the glorious opportunites here for us globally to translate our feelings of sympathy to concrete and consistent actions of care. For too long, the first world nations and us in Caricom have turned a blind eye to Haiti and her suffering. Yes we had been sweeping the Haitian issues under a carpet! However, this is our opportunity to make a difference. All of us can assist even in these hard economic times - food, clothes, medication, money, will greatly assist our Haitian neighbours. So let us all mobilise the people around to give from the little that they have.

Given Haiti's history and even from news clips that are being seen, we see the resilience of the Haitian people. Haitians patiently digging through the rubble with little or no tools to free their trapped brothers and sisters. This resilience is rooted in the history of a people who fought and gained freedom with their sweat and their blood.

Missy - Haiti's earthquake is a reminder of how quickly our circumstances change. We, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for example live with the constant reminder that the man on the mountain can blow his top at anytime. I have memories of the 1979 eruption. But the lesson is always that we try to live our lives making a difference.

RE: POOR POOR HAITI

Well, I will tell you what we are doing in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.....People have been calling in and pledging whatever little they have.....On Sunday the radio stations will be linked to have a "marathon" to pledge to the Haiti Relief Fund. The Government will also be helping...Small organisations and work places have started collecting. and the list goes on.... Just this morning a guy from the Sanitation Dept here said he and the other cleaners are going to put together and contribute....This is echoing all through this Blessed Nation, Hairoun.....Where I work, our MG suggested instead of having department parties when the season is finished, the money can now go to Haiti in addition to other funds.....But the folks on that island have already started to collect food to send. Of course I will feel like a loser if I stay out of this....Course I want to be a part of this....."Tears are not enough.." as the song says. Sometimes I feel numb other times I really cant help but bawl.....Damn...Damn....Damn. Can you imagine that the # of persons feared dead is almost the population of St. Vincent & the Grenadines - 107,000? And they say lightening doesnt strike in the same place 2wice? Is this an act of God or the Devil? I bet this question rests on our minds....

RE: POOR POOR HAITI

My personal thank you for starting this conversation...Our Brothers and Sisters are in such a dire condition, one that is humanly impossible for us to imagine. My heart breaks for the suffering that they are going through, on every level; the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual pain. Let us all come together as human and donate whatever we can to help these people who needs it more than we can imagine. Crying and talking wont help, let us really get up and do what we can... Like Missy... lets get to Red Cross, Yele foundation, or any local churches and organizations that are shipping food, clothes, and medical supplies.
My deepest love goes out to all family and friends of this region.
POOR POOR HAITI

What have the Haitians people done to deserve all this.....They cant even get over one disaster and up comes another.........I feel for my Haitian Brothers and Sisters.......It hurts to see them suffer so often.......Well in St. Vincent & the Grenadines we are going to start from tomorrow to donate via Red Cross to Haiti Relief Fund.........Though little it may be.....it will help .......Please people....be grateful for what you have......When things are not going too well.....just tell yourself.....folks are going through a lot worse.....Haiti, Sudan....etc...Let's all channel some positive vibes to them and ask the Most High God to have mercy on this world. .....HAITI AM SORRY.....
