The significance of race and gender is usually high in deciding the election. In a world where women out number men we find more often women are big deciders of election outcome. But here is what gets me- Is that women relinquish their power base after the election and settle in their position as second class citizen. Margaret Thatcher did little to change the status of women in the UK during her rein as prime minister. Same could be said of Eugenia Charles of Dominica. They were just politician and I expected nothing better from them. But I do hold voter responsible for policies implement during a period of governance. I am hoping the citizen (especially the women since you are the deciding factor) remain empowered through this period of governance and not just demand more for yourselves and your country but hold you elected officials accountable.
What Next- don't just use this forum to air your view- use it to unify and invoke change. I am so happy that change has come to TT and I hope she will be given a real opportunity along with her new government to make a difference.

Race was an issue in elections but Im glad it did not dominate.

Today, we leave the labels behind, we move forward as a nation, all
committed to the same goal, a safer, more prosperous and just Trinidad
and Tobago where we all have opportunity and equality, and so I say, no
more labels, no more prefixes of Afro- and Indo- and North and South
and East-West Corridor and Tobago. The election is over.’ -Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar
