How should a child be punished.

I wonder if it is because we are not disciplining the child today thorugh a sound whipping why children are so unruly these days.....I am not talking visiously beating the child to cause bodily harm......just a good *** whupping........Listen to stories of adults and they are proud of the lashes from parents, that kept them in tact. Today you beat a child in the Metropolitan countries, they call 911 and your *** is put in jail....So how do we punish a child.....Do we take away their priviledges (PC, cell phone etc)....Is this enough? They will have another phone anyways....Do we take away their dinners..? They dont care cause they are mad too, and when you are mad you dont eat....so there!! It is like kids these days are immune to the various punishments that exist today......What can parents do?

The impact of crime on education

A recent news item indicated that the Mona and St. Augustine campuses of the University of the West Indies are encountering problems recruiting foreign lecturers due to high rates of crime in these territorities. What are the implications if any on the quality of teaching and learning at these campuses? Further, with Jamaica recording 1680 murders and Trinidad just over 500 murders in 2009, what strategies can be implemented in these territories to reduce the high crime rates?

Before there was television, we played

Yes, we played games.....Daylight or moon night
I remember games like:

Moral,

Hopscotch

Marbles with the big Gommie Man (the big marble)

Skipping - Can d weddin go Yes No Yes No .....YES....Knife Fork, Spoon Stick

And JAX - I bought a Jax ball for Christmas 2009 for $1.75 but booh hooo I cant find Jax.....so I going use small stones....and during my lunch hour, I will play.....ONES Z's, GLORIES, PING PONG, PICKINGS, PUT TOGETHER,

Night time, when the Moon was ripe, and the adults reflected on the olden days, we kids played:

JIPSY IN D MOONLIGHT

1, 2, 3 red light.....:D

Coo Pee

Ooooooo ooooo PAN AH PAN......hehhh hehh

And we would eat boil corn and breadnut

Or go for moonlight walks.....and pretend to see jumbie.....stone a dog (am sorry now) or run from a drunkard.....

We didnt know bout KFC etc.....We thief milk and sugar.....and i remember some lil condensed milk called Little Mary fo 5 cents

Oh and we grandpappy died and left us a goat....that was all he could afford.....We used to tie it out over the hill in some bushes.....no raper man was in then....and we would raid the jamaica plum tree and JAR PLUM trees and mango trees, and eat a thing called Sugar, and eat bread and cheese (a plant).....we even eat dirt.......Serious, dirt yes....oooo weee.

My version of baby house mud pies and beating dasheen bush with a belt.....and we used to play Cowboy

Beem Beem ah see Yute behind d stone......Yute dead.....

Oh boy, I miss dem days.....and I aint old yet....;):P

Colloquial Terms

Hey, help me come up with some of these terms - Let me start
- One, one does full basket

- Who don't hear does feel

- What sweet in Goat mouth, does sour in de bam bam

- Way day pon horse back does go under its belly

- When yo tink is bush, is people

- School children say

- Yo know when ram goat merry, what does happen? Is this suggestion another white racist position geared at demonising and denigrating everything that is African and everything that is black? Because it hurts my heart when we West Indians try to drop our local tongues like hot bread. I am not saying that one should not learn to speak standard english language, because that is a universal language and should be taught in schools etc. But why do many of us think it is an embarrassment to talk creole or dialect.....Do we know how this came about? Well from what I was taught, it was the way slaves communicated amongst themselves so Massa couldnt understand.....Hmmmm..Wow....Our foreparents were wise people.....So what is happening to us in today's world? In my opinion, I say know the standard English, and cherish the creole language.....It is a mixture of all kinds of languages.....In St. Vincent & the Grenadines, our creole is a pepper pot of English, African, Spanish, French, Garifuna.....I love it.....it is what I call "sweet talking". So for those of you who "drop" the dialect the minute you board a plane to go Foreign, I say STOP IT, AND STOP IT NOW.......It sounds foolish when you try to talk like a yankee with a whole set of bad grammar......And dont come tell me that you have to speak like this for them to understand. Bullcrappo!! They would understand you if you speak clear, plain simple English.......Observe this next time you hear a West Indian cussing.......The minute a Yankee-West Indian gets mad just listen how he/she switches from the yankee accent to the creole twang....:D. If you are not sure about the grammar, read, read, read......learn the proper english, but keep our sweet talking creole....All yo anderstand wey me ah say?
I have already written over quota....I still have a lot to say on this topic.

Bolt and our Caribbean athletes

In the absence of a track and field section I have opted to comment on the performance of our Caribbean Athletes in the IAAF World Championship in the History/Heritage section because this is indeed history in progress. What do we say about Usain's Bolt performance in the 100m and 200m respectively, both record breaking runs? This man is simply special!

What is heartening is the apparent shift in dominance of track and field from the US to the Caribbean nations. Jamaica is clearly the best sprinting nation of the world and has demonstrated this week ,that it a nation blessed not only with sporting talent but with the coaches who can harness that talent into world record breaking performances. Indicatively, quite a few of the other Caribbean athletes who performed well are being coached in Jamaica by Jamaican coaches.

Respect to Trinidad, Barbados, the Bahamas, St. Kitts, Cuba, Dominica to name a few. Clearly, our athletes have demonstrated, as they did before, and in other sporting disciplines that we have what it takes to compete at the highest level with the best in the world. We ought therefore to be demonstrate greater confidence in our abilities in other areas. Respect.

Garifuna Reunion in SVG - a return the ancestral home

St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Yuramein), the ancestral home of the Garifuna hosts the reunion of its Garifuna people from July 18th to 23rd. The reunion made possible through the initiative of the Garifuna Coalition (USA) and the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDI), as part of the Vincy Homecoming 2009 activities should be seen as more than just another activity.

This reunion offers numerous opportunities both to the descendants of our people who were exiled by the British and to Vincentians alike. For the majority of Vincentians this is an excellent opportunity to learn, recapture and reconstruct portions of our history which has been lost. Likewise our visiting Garifuna brothers will be exposed to the people and culture of a land which holds the deposits of their foreparents. No doubt these few days will be culturally rich and historically engaging.

This reunion spans but a few days, how do we move forward as we continue to understand our past in our attempt to influence our destinies? How do we fan the flames of exchange?

Reparations and the Caribbean

Should the Caribbean people continue to struggle to obtain reparations for slavery?
