My statement about spending so we can perceived the "right" manner is not judgmental - check the consumption statistics. As per your question regarding Susan- lets give her a few more weeks and see who emerges at the other end of her transformation.:w00t: :hehe:

Wonderful question, perception is your very first impression normally based on your own personal feelings, instincts etc. You then start to make judgement of people after a speaking or hearing what the person has to say. There are times when I feel the two terms are intertwined and the lines seems to disappear. Think we all fall victims of being judgemental or perceive someone to be something that they are not.

You say, "We spend countless $$$$ and time making sure that we are perceived in our desired manner, based on our attire/appearance" I think thats a very judgemental statement. There are people who knows who they are and is not determined by the clothes that they wear, those that are comfortable in whatever they choose to wear. question for you is do you think that society will change the way Susan feels about herself, will they accept her, and "make her famous" by changing her "image"?

Susan is extremely talented - no doubt.

I am not sure that I judged her- but i must admit that I was blown away by what I heard. And though this forum is one for entertainment I am not sure that our discussion is really about entertainment. Let me first ask a question- "Is perception judgment?" I perceive a person based on their appearance. From that appearance I may proceed to say "that person is neatly attired". If anything, that can be should be considered a matter of opinion, a prejudice- certainly not a judgment. In the case of Susan Boyle I certainly didn't look at her and said - "she can't sing"- nor did I think that she didn't belong on that stage. I maybe be wrong, and perception is judgment- then if so, we are the biggest purveyors of judgment. We spend countless $$$$ and time making sure that we are perceived in our desired manner, based on our attire/appearance.
We want others to use these costumes and this stage to make curtain calls our lives- or do we?

I think she will make it as an entertainer, not because she shocked Simon, but because in that short time we grew to like her. She has a winning personality. I think this was also a great reminder to us of how we prejudge and our concept of what beauty is. Susan has reminded us that true beauty is really on the inside. Yes it is a case of judging people by the way they look. But more than anything its a stigma that these shows have. On so many occasions these shows seems to bring out characters that are trying to get their 5 mins of fame.( you remember William Hung that sang "she bang..") After watching this video, I personally thought Ms Suzan came to the stage for a moment BUT when she opened her mouth boy was she great! It blew me away.

But the real question is now that we know she can sing, will she be "acceptable", will she fit the "look" that is portrayed by the media? Will she be famous because she can sing or will it be just because she shocked Simon with her true talent?

Why is her auditon so shocking to most of us? Is this a classic case of why not to judge a book by its cover? Does her performance serve to show us how judgmental or even shallow we can be by forming an opinion about others based on their looks?
