I was listening to the radio today and they were discussing the first criminal case as a result of the financial melt down. it involved two Bear employees. I cannot remember their names. What stuck with me was that Google had been subpoenaed and had produced one of the defendants email accounts. Now I know email is not 100% save because of hackers etc. I also know that work emails belong to the company you work for. What I did not realize is that google owns your email accounts, or do they? Even though they were subpeoenaed I wonder if they were within their rights when they disclosed the information or if this guy's privacy was violated?

I personally did not know that they own your accounts, that is very scary. But that also comes down to our lack of reading the terms and conditions that these companies normally place before we commit. We (including myself) always check the yes box and proceed. So I am sure that rights to account is somewhere in that terms and condiions contract, we just do not take the time to read. If they own it I dont think its an invasion of privacy, that lead me to ask thi question, do companies have the right to use social networks like facebook and mypage as pre screening before they hire you for a job? How does a social network have bearings on your ability to perform on a job?

I too don't take the time to read the agreements stated on any of these services. Who has the time to? And if I did have the time, I am not sure I would have what it takes to understand all the legal jargon. So I enter this world of the unknown, suspecting of everything and everyone. I don't put anything out there that I want to keep somewhat personal for a little bit longer. Truth is nothing is secret in this digital world. If the government (the largest employer of hackers) want it they get it. And if the hacker cant get it, their legal certainly would.
The other issue is whether you own the content you place on the internet via any service such as Google. If doesn't explicitly say you do own it, I assume that you don't. In exchange for your content, Google, facebook, Hi-5, etc, make million$ from advertising. Many of these ads target you specifically- based on your content. Yes even the content of your "private" email.
