Yes, this is not a rumor but in fact true. Jamaican officials have banned explicit music from both radio and television, however they have not been able to have any reign over cd's and dvd's. With that said, I have taken the opportunity to cut and paste a video that one may find the lyrical content "explicit" while others entertained. But what is the real issue here. Is it that we are truly protecting the children/youth? are we a nation that still hides from sex? Is it that we are scared that sex is becoming more vocal and others still shame from even saying the words?

Why would Jamaican's after so many years ban these lyrics? If we look back at songs from Shabba and the contents that he song I am not sure I see the difference. Tell me your thoughts and please look at the video clip below!

They banned these songs because the lyrics are inappropriate and vulgar.  Nothing is left to the imagination anymore. What does it say about us? Are we an unimaginative and lewd society?

I see nothing wrong with trying to ban these songs once there is some sort of objective standard.  This may actually  help artists  really tap into their creativity and create  something unique..something maybe even timeless.

If you look further than Shabba and you look to the  Bob Marley days you see what we are capable  of.  similarly if you look at old calypsonians like Roaring Lion and even Sparrow you see a difference in their lyrics. When they talked about sex it was not in a vulgar manner.

I see nothing wrong with Jamaica  taking this action now.  It is never too late to make a change or  try to make a positive difference in society

You are right to some extent- What we have seen is a surfacing (publically) of “explicit” content/lyrics. And yes the work of Bob and Sparrow were genius on so many levels- Unparalleled in any era. But every era has had what is deemed “vulgar”. Such music was and is performed in the clubs, and stage shows, and the back ally bars.
Vulgarity is a matter of opinion. It’s a Label used to describe so many action perpetuated by the poorer class. And as dictated to us, through the laws and doctrine of our colonizers, sex is vulgar. To talk about sex is vulgar and should be kept behind closed doors. Certain sexual acts are vulgar. You talk loudly- you are Vulgar- Wear skimpy clothing – you are vulgar.
Music is art in many forms (genres), some you appreciate, and some you don’t. I can understand if you tell me you think dancehall music is less creative. Or that it’s socially irresponsible is another point you can make. Because yes- it does very little if anything at all to left its listeners mentally or spiritually.
Highlighting the hypocrisy that encompassing the act of banning this musical art form is the fact that violent lyrics are seldom met with such disdain. Women have forever been the subject of sexual, verbal, physical abuse in so many musical genres- not just dancehall- but that seems to be acceptable. Sound depicting homosexuality as wrong and invoking violence towards homosexuals were banned from stage shows long ago- supporters would not support a shows where an artiste who speaks out against homosexuality was schedule to perform. But songs violent content and female victim faces no such backlash.
Is this the campaign missionary sex in your bedroom only?
