Our societies are constructed on biblical teachings which define women as the weaker of the two sexes.  She was and to some extent still is placed in a position of subservience to men. Is there such a thing as equality of the sexes or is this just a misguided notion pushed by women engaged in the women's movement.

I read this and respond with a smile on my face, only because it such a loaded statement/question. I could can debate this is issue convincely with enough material and life references. The woman's lib movement- (and i use that label very losely since there so many factions of the "movement")- on many occassional lead the population to believe that equality between the sexes means a woman can and should do whatever a man does- what a rivalry that created. This Niferian proverb sums my position nicely "When man pikin dey piss, him dey hold something for hand. Woman wey try-am, go piss for her hand".

As soon as we come to an understanding that men and women are different, in ways that are not comparible or measurable we will all be better off for it. The detriment, is that women have to come to internal this teaching that they are "less" and have come to accept a life of servitude- subject to great abuse, and pass this mind set on to their children (boys and girls). Or they spend a life time struggle to prove that they are equal. A woman doesn't need to be equal, her contribution to "civilization" and life speaks for itself. But man's (male) insecurity has cause him to turn a deaf ear to those contributions.

Women need to recognized that their opportunity for equal treatment, doesn't require that they prove to a man that you can do what he does. Your opportunity for equal treatment is in the way you raise the worlds children.
