| Today, the eyes across the globe focus on EarthDay and we are reminded of our individual responsibilitiy in protecting the planet on which we live. In conversation with a child this morning, she said the most profound thing. "every day should be earth day". She has already grasped the importance of environmental protection and preservation as a daily and individual act. Climate change, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, the ultra pollution of our planet among others are issues that affect all of us. What about you, shouldn't everyday be earthday? What can you do to prevent further environmental degradation?

| Yute...my son asked me what did I did for earth day? and I was ashamed to say nothing in particular...although like you said it shouldnt be focused on one day it is our responsibility as an individual to make daily changes. I have purchased grocery bags as oppose to the plastic bags and doing a better job at recycling. Writing this post have allowed me to take a self inventory which have revealed that I do not do enough to help our earth; I need to help preserve the earth for our kids. Please give suggestions that can help me and others play our part in helping our earth on a daily basis.

Sorry if I come off aggressive but this is an issue i am very passionate about. Beside the fact that being environmental conscious and friendly is the right thing to do- I also I have a son that I love very much and I want to give a him an earth worth living in. I have said and will continue to say- as a generation would be written down as history's dumbest generation ever. Armed with more information than any other generation, we have managed to create more havoc than any other generation. Blessed One- this is where it starts- with you- with us.
The solutions are simple, but they require discipline. Turn off your pipe when brushing your teeth. Turn off your pipe when washing dishes. Turn off the light when you leave a room. Unplug as much appliances as you can when leaving home. Curb our consumption. It is said that humans are the only animals that dig their graves with their teeth. We have eaten our way to bad health, while pushing the world to environmental disaster. Eat less! Eat less meat! Buy local! Buy Fair Trade product. Recycle your cloths - give them to someone in need. Reduce the use of bottled water- buy a filter. I use the plastic bag I get as garbage bags- I haven't bought a garbage bag in about 18 months.
Open your eyes, open your minds- live smarter!

Chatoyer has touched on a number of simple but important ways in which we can help our planet. Nothing beats education! We need to seriously educate ourselves and those around us not only on the ways in which can preserve our planet but why it is important to do so. Here are some other ways:- Use fluorescent bulbs: these are more efficient than incadescent bulbs, use less energy and carbon dioxide emissions are reduce.
- Use products that do not contain Chlorofluoro Carbons (CFCs): CFCs are responsible for the destruction of the ozone layer. It is hotter these days right! Check the can for CFCs.
- Start a compost pile in your backyard
- Purchase reusable storage containers: instead of using aluminium wraps and plasticwraps to store foods, use washable containers.
- Plant a tree, a small flowering or non-flowering plant:Trees help to reduce the effect of global warming by using up CO2.
- Use solar energy
- Recycle, recycle, recycle
There are still a number of other ways but this is a good start.
