| The calypso artform has traditionally been the conscience of our Caribbean societies, the torch illuminating the injustices meted out to the masses. However, its popularity among our youth appears to be waning - is the artform really dying? Can an appreciation for calypso and other genre of music coexists without the calypso artform dying? How can we heighten interest in the artform?

Calypso- they great teacher. The medium through which history is taught from the perspective of the masses. Dying? The assault on the art form has been relentless. Remember this messenger that evolved from the drums of slavery. With messages so strong, so liberating. Do you really think those with the resources would have nourished it?
Calypso isn't dying of natural causes- what you are seeing here is attempted murder. Can it be saved- absolutely. But just like the other art forms it requires input of finance and promotion. But calypso is so far gone our efforts have got to be magnanimous. Grass root organization needs to get involve, schools need to get involved, businesses needs to get involve. But the question is- would want to have calypso around giving its history?

Are you looking at a particular Island? Please let me know where you see the diversification and evolution. Here is what I see. I see an art form from which the artiste sustain a livelihood. Forget that- its an art form from which the artiste make little or no money. Its now even more season- after carnival you struggle to hear a calypso on the radio or see a calypsonian in a stage show.
But to go beyond that- the art form itself seams to be eating away from inside out. The lyrical content not as strong as it use to be, as if calypsonian have stop keeping abreast of world affairs- as if the political atmosphere has cause them to go "soft". The art form seem to be losing it creativity- rarely do you find craftiness with the language. Remember "Mystery", Sparrow, Kitchener, Black Stalin, Singing Sandra, The Professor.? What Next- if you know different please let me know- I would be happy to hear about it.
